The Prefects собрались в Бирмингеме в 1976 году и вроде, как считаются первой местной панк группой. Это были: Robert Lloyd (вокал), братья Alan (гитара) и Paul Apperley (барабаны) и Graham Blunt (бас). Группа вела достаточно активную деятельность и до своего распада в 1979 году отыграла около 85 концертов. The Prefects успели поделить сцену с Buzzcocks, Slits, The Fall, The Damned и прокатиться в туре "White Riot Tour" с The Clash. Группа дважды играла в программе Джона Пила, но так и не выпустила ни одного релиза, не считая сингла "Going Through The Motions" вышедшего уже после распада. За время активности в составе менялись басист и барабанщик. В 1979 году группа трансформировалась в пост панк коллектив The Nightingales. В 2000-х на различных лейблах вышло несколько разных ретроспективных компиляции творчества The Prefects и один Live 1978 года.
