Братья Phillip и Peter Ley заболели музыкой уже в конце 70-х, вдохновляясь The Jam, Sex Pistols и прочими героями панк сцены, парни начали пробовать собственные силы в написании и исполнении песен. За 80-е братья успели поиграть в таких бандах как: Embryo, Jump Squad, The Untouchables и Under The Gun. Однако, окончательно они себя нашли в 1988 году собрав Guitar Gangsters. Записав пару треков для сборника Underground Rockers Compilation (1988), группа взялась за дебютный альбом. Основной вокал и гитару на себя взял Peter (он же Powerful Pierre), Phillip взял в руки бас, а за барабанами значился Spencer Holman. "Prohibition" вышел в 1989 году и был отлично встречен, а Stiff Little Fingers взяли Guitar Gangsters в совместный тур. Так началась настоящая творческая жизнь группы, продолжающаяся и по сей день. Уже ко второму альбому Spencer покинул коллектив и его место занял старый приятель братьев Steve Brewer, уже музицировавший с ними в их старых группах. В таком виде трио проиграло вплоть до 2016 года, когда место за установкой занял Chris Benton, а в 2018 к команде добавился второй гитарист Ed Sonsino.
